First quote for transmission replacement in the E46 was $5,700. There’s no way a decade-old automatic trans costs that much.

*looks up 5HP19 prices*

According to the Internet’s, you can swap an LS and T56 for less than that.

You should be able to find a usable transmission in a yard somewhere. My local yard has an E46 coming in about every other month

I’m more looking for the warranty that comes with a reman unit - 24 month/unlimited miles (45k miles for me in that amount of time). Plus, with removal, rebuild, and reinstallation I’m still looking at $2,500 or so.

You’re like 30% of the way towards an E46 M3 at that point. Might be time to consider upgrading.

Reminds me of the quote I got for some hydraulic hose(s) for over 2k, with close to ten hours of labour for installation. I drive a coupe now, I’m too scared to press the button, it might work with some assistance but I don’t want to be stuck with a half open roof.

Oh hells no. The last thing I need is a high-mileage performance car to replace my higher-mileage performance-ish car.

I would never put a used transmission in. I found one with 50k miles on it but I’m just too concerned with potential issues, and there would be no warranty for the work if something went wrong.

Life is short, man. Shit crashes and breaks no matter what you do. You can be afraid of that, or you can have an orgasm while that high pitched six cylinder exhaust note fellates your ears. Your choice.

I got a quote on a rebuilt ZF 5HP19 (AWD) tranny for my 01 Passat. $3,900. Rebuilt. But in typical VW fashion the problem disappeared and hasn't returned in over a year.

I can tell you they’re marking them up significantly. I wonder if the boxes you posted are direct from ZF, or by a 3rd party. I have no idea where the extra $2k comes from, labor pays 7.2 hours, and I usually include the mandatory line flush in that time. We usually come in around $4-4500 for a 5HP depending on application, and that’s for a trans with a 3 year/unlimited mileage warranty from a reputable rebuilder here in CA.

that looks good on my screen, but I’m not going to get a $15k loan at some crazy interest rate so I can hit redline and spin a bearing :P

In my experience, used automatics are always a bad idea. Always.

Yo you don’t need no damned loan! All you got to do is put on this jacket and hold this valet sign and wait at a fancy restaurant. One of them M3s will pull up and the owner will just hand you the keys. You might even git money off the top as a tip! Why get a loan for somethin’ you could get for free? Mo money, mo money, mo money

My mechanic is telling me the box he priced is $4,900, which is probably accurate ($4k for the box and seems like it includes core charge). That’s also for a rear main seal replacement as well, which they should be doing while they’re down there anyway.

The best price I’ve been able to find for a reman is $3,200 plus $800 core charge, but I have no idea what shipping would cost me from CA. Probably $200, and then another $200 to return my core.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a client have to pay a core charge on a ZF box, so that shouldn’t factor into your final total. Unless the case has a hole in it, it almost certainly won’t apply. The rear main takes maybe 30 minutes moving slowly so as not to damage the pan gasket, once the flex plate is off, and the new part with the seal plate, gasket, and bolts is $125. I sell the transmissions for $3400 or so, filled with fluid, and that makes us a reasonable markup while competing well with most vendors, and heavily undercuts BMW. Shipping cost is about right for me, we paid $195 on the last one a couple months ago, but that’s truck freight within CA so your costs would increase. What’s the labor rate there? Mine’s $105.

IIRC his labor rate is $98. I’ve got the option to source a transmission and have him install it, but I can’t find a warranty that includes any consideration for labor. The one he proposed is 24 month/unlimited miles, and they cover $50/hour on labor for replacement. I’m thinking my best bets are either RMeuropean or Pelican Parts for the replacement trans.
